Battlefield Park Elementary has deep roots in the Mechanicsville community of Hanover County. The original portion of the school was completed in 1936, and a majority of community members have either attended Battlefield Park Elementary or know a relative or friend who once attended the school. The BPES community, staff, and student body have become a true "family of learners."

Battlefield Park Elementary has a student body of children in preschool through fifth grade. Its staff is committed to maintaining high academic standards for all students in a safe and nurturing environment.

Battlefield Park Elementary 2018 Highlight

Battlefield Park Elementary School collaborated with Virginia Commonwealth University School of Engineering to create an Innovation Day for students and staff Pre-K through 5th grade. Over 40 students and 10 faculty members from VCU School of Engineering planned and implemented innovative, hands on, engaging activities for all students Pre-K to 5th grade. The innovative lessons included measurement activities for our preschool students, constructing towers for our kindergarten students, making music with water for our 1st graders, creating art out of magnets for our second graders, building rocket ships with our 3rd graders, building prosthetic hands with our 4th graders, and computer coding with our 5th graders. In addition, our students learned about the many different type of engineers in the world and the many paths one can take to pursue a career in engineering.

During the 2017–2018 school year Mrs. Julie Hudnall, our physical education teacher, was selected as the first Hanover Innovator of the Year for the entire county. Mrs. Hudnall understands that innovation goes beyond just using technology and even incorporates a STEM or STREAM lesson into classroom instruction. Innovation is a mindset, and Julie Hudnall has truly embraced what innovation entails. She portrays the ideal innovator’s mindset on a daily basis. She goes above and beyond to create innovative lessons that inspires and engages every single student (Pre K-5th) at Battlefield Park Elementary School.

Battlefield Park Elementary School was named a 2017–2019 National PTA School of Excellence. BPES is one of only 143 schools and PTAs from 29 states across the country to achieve this prestigious status this year. The National PTA School of Excellence designation recognizes the commitment of schools and PTAs in building an inclusive and welcoming school-community where all families contribute to enriching the educational experience and overall well-being for all students.
